2-27-07 Election and 2-13-07 City Council Meeting
Please vote Tuesday, February 27, 2007 for the one thing on the ballot: tax referendum for the Morton High Schools. Whether you want your taxes increased or not, please vote. This is about education and taxes.

Getting on to the February 13, 2007 City Council Meeting:

The Council voted to approve $346,000.00 for Mike & Sons out of TIF monies. Mike & Sons is located on Ogden and is near Lombard. It appears the Mayor is going to veto this at the next meeting.

The Council approved the City's share of the Berwyn Develpment Corporation's budget.

The Retail Overlay District for the Depot Disrict and Cermak Road will have a public hearing.

The ordinance approving the automated traffic law enforcement system was finally passed.

A zoning variance was approved by a 5-3 vote for property at Ridgeland and 16th. I am deadset against this. The owner wants a restaurant and coffee shope, and ultimately, a liquor license. The owner owns an adjacent business and in my humble opinion, is not a good neighbor with the residents.

Just as we are about to have an amended overlay retail district established on Cermak, the Council, again 5-3, approved a real estate office within 500 feet of another real estate office. Bad precedent. I want retail.

The Public Works Director was granted permission to put an ad out in the public to hire a Traffic Engineer, which would be Berwyn's first. Badly needed.

The Police Chief wants to hire 5 new radio operators. Last year, the radio operators, who handle 315,000 calls a year, calls that are 911, 311, and any other call that goes through the Police Department. 2 people work at any one time. The Chief wants three people. If you have encountered a rude or short radio operator, now you know why. As we work on the budget, we shall see if we have the monies.

That is about it.

Remember, citywide neighborhood watch meeting at 7 pm, at the Police Station, on February 28, 2007. Whether you are a captain or not, these are generally very informative meetings.

Two Important Matters
There is an election Tuesday, February 27, 2007. There is one item on the ballot. One. If you care about education, you will vote yes for a tax increase for the Morton High Schools.

If you care about a tax increase, you will vote no.

Those are your two choices.

Second, there is Citywide Neighborhood Watch Meeting on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 7:00 pm at the Police Station. No matter who you are, you will learn valuable information about what is going on in the City from a police perspective.

Tonight, City Hall, ABC Candidates Forum
All Berwyn Committee

A.B.C. FORUMS TO FEATURE PARK, SCHOOL BOARD RACES to provide ample opportunity for candidates running for Berwyn park and school boards to present their qualifications to the voters before the April 17 election.

The All Berwyn Committee will host two public forums.

The first forum to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, and will feature candidates for the boards of the North Berwyn Elementary School District 98, South Berwyn Elementary School District 100, Berwyn Park District and North Berwyn Park District.

The second forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, will focus on candidates for the boards of Morton High School District 201 and Morton College District 527.

Both forums will be held in the City Council Chambers of Berwyn City Hall, 6700 W. 26th St.

“On April 17, voters must decide which candidates they believe best can assure quality education for Berwyn children and variety of recreational opportunities for residents of all ages,” said A.B.C. President Susan Anderson. “Because we believe Berwyn residents share our belief in the importance of these decisions, the All Berwyn Committee is devoting two successive meetings to election issues.”

Anderson said candidates are being invited to participate in a “forum, not a debate, a format that is in keeping with the A.B.C.’s mission as a non-partisan, non-sectarian organization.” Candidates will be asked to present their qualifications and goals. An audience participation question-and-answer session will follow.

City Council Meeting, January 23, 2007
There were 54 items on the agenda. The meeting was very personal and political, which I am afraid, will more than likely be the modus operandi for the remainder of my term(April 2009).

As usual, I will write about the matters that count.

The Aldermanic Committees were changed, with a dramatic re-shuffle. I am now in charge of the Budget Committee. We are hoping to vote on the budget the first meeting in March, rather than the last meeting. For next year, I would actually like to approve the budget at the end of this year. Time will tell. With a new finance director who is very good, this is certainly a great possibility.

There is an amended retail overlay district for Cermak Road. Essentially, what this means, is that retail businesses are preferred on Cermak, rather than banks or mortgage companies. Coupled with Main Street, I am hopeful Cermak Road will become a great street, far from what it is now.

We are getting very close to having the automated ticket generator at four intersections in Berwyn. I caution you that you do not want to run a red light in Berwyn. I will tell everyone when everything is up and working and legal.

So, out of 54 items, that is it. There are 62 items on the February 13, 2007 agenda. Many highly charged items. Woe is me.
