Ice Cream
Made you look.

You are cordially invited to travel to the Depot District of Berwyn on Saturday, May 1st, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the 3rd Annual Berwyn Arts Council Student Art Showcase entitled, "Passport to Art"!
Come see the sensational artwork by the students of the North and South Berwyn School districts, as well as St. Odilo and St. Leonards Catholic Schools displayed in 14 Depot District businesses!
Students and children attending with their parents will receive a "passport." As students search and "travel" to find the art, they will receive a sticker in each business they visit. Mom and dad can look at the art, and discover some of the wonderful shops and restaurants in the Depot District area.
Once students have a "full" passport, they can end their adventure at the "Over the Rainbow" Ice Cream Shop for a free ice cream cone! Special thanks goes to Jose Ramirez, BDC member, Depot District Business Association member, and patron of the arts for assisting in coordinating this event with the Berwyn Arts Council.

Friday Night
Coming to a town near you...

Horrorbles is proud to welcome Mixed media artist, Jeffrey Gorski on
Friday, April 30th from 7:30-10:30 pm. After one of Jeffrey's
custom-painted vinyl dolls - a piece inspired by Friday the 13th slasher
Jason Voorhees - went on display at Horrorbles recently, the Galerie
eagerly commissioned more work from the artist.

An aspiring filmmaker and a photographer by trade, Jeff's keen eye for
detail and passion for all things pop culture guides his aesthetic. He
specializes in custom-painted dolls, painted canvas and creative stencil
work that inventively - and often humorously - re-imagines some of
horror history's most infamous killers, legendary movie monsters and
other beloved characters.

Jeff based each piece in his upcoming show at Horrorbles on iconic
horror & pop-culture characters, such as the hugely popular video game
Bioshock's looming "Big Daddy" and Homestar's cocky "Strongbad"
luchador, and also designed a few pieces of his own macabre creation,
such as a vinyl doll with a saw blade embedded in his skull and another
who's a "work in progress" - skin stitched up like Sally from The
Nightmare Before Christmas.

Jeff's other pieces celebrate Evil Dead, Halloween and Silent Hill using
stencils painted on vintage vinyl records and canvas. Jeff's collection
at Horrorbles will also feature a series of custom-painted mini monsters
and more.

All displayed pieces will be available for sale with Jeffrey present all
evening to answer questions. The artist is also available to do custom
work through Horrorbles

A Berwyn Author
Chicago's Little Village: Lawndale-Crawford just released!

Book Description:

Little Village has been known by several names over the past 140 years, but its rich culture and history have never been forgotten. Situated on Chicago's southwest side, Little Village has gone from real estate promoters Millard and Decker's affluent "suburb" Lawndale to one of the largest Bohemian enclaves in the United States. This vibrant neighborhood is known today as the largest Mexican community in the state of Illinois.

Little Village has almost always been a working-class immigrant neighborhood filled with hardworking men and woman who want their piece of the American dream. From residents such as the martyred world's fair mayor Anton Cermak to the typical immigrant family next door, these strong-willed people have made their mark on Chicago and the rest of the New World.

Author Bio: Frank S. Magallon, local Berwyn resident, is a historian concentrating on the suburbs of Berwyn, Cicero, and the Czech neighborhoods of Chicago. He is an avid collector of rare photographs and memorabilia from these areas and shares many never-before-seen images in this book.

Magallon's connection to Little Village spans nearly three-quarters of a century with his father's and mother's families residing within the community.

This Weekend in Theater
Last five shows of Rohina Malik's UNVEILED at Victory Gardens this week. Very nice review on Chris Jones Tribune blog. We have had amazing post-show dialogues every night.

You should have received your postcard in the mail this week for Tanya Saracho's OUR LADY OF THE UNDERPASS which begins tomorrow. I saw a run thru yesterday and laughed a ton and was very moved by the end.

Come for Press Opening this Saturday, April 3 at 5:00 PM to enjoy free tamales and chicken tinga from our friends Jaime and Lizet of Tamale Hut Cafe. By the way, grab this week's issue of Time Out for a feature on 16th Street Theater by John Beer: http://chicago.timeout.com/articles/theater/84227/berwyns-16th-street-theater-and-ann-filmer

16th Street Theater UNVEILED - March 24 - April 4

Chris Jones on his Chicago Tribune blog writes, "Rohina Malik, the hugely talented writer-actress at the center of the Victory Gardens solo show Unveiled, is a remarkable new theatrical voice in Chicago. In her rich, upbeat and very enjoyable 70-minute collection of five character studies of Muslim women in modern-day America, Malik gives voice to characters from whom we hear far too little in the theater... elegantly staged by Ann Filmer, whose innovative 16th Street Theater first staged this piece in Berwyn."
