Janet Wondra will be reading from her new book of poetry, Bad Attitude, this Saturday @ 7pm as part of the Tamale Hut Cafe Reading Series, 8300 W Cermak Rd., North Riverside IL.

Author of the newly released chapbook Bad Attitude, Janet Wondra has spread her mischief from her home state of California through Louisiana, Georgia, and into Chicago. Her poetry is collected in three volumes—Emerging Island Cultures, The Wandering Mother, and Long Division—and has been published in such journals as The Southern Review, Witness, Michigan Quarterly Review, Connecticut Review, and Exquisite Corpse. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in Short Takes: Brief Encounters with Contemporary Nonfiction and In the Middle of the Middle West: Literary Nonfiction from the Heartland as well as in The Christian Science Monitor, Denver Quarterly, and Bellingham Review. Also an experimental filmmaker, she has screened her work at festivals and art museums from Germany to California. She teaches creative writing and American literature at Roosevelt University, Chicago.

As always, an open mic will follow after Janet reads, so if you got it bring something to read. Tamales and Tinga - this is a BYOB.

22, a new design studio and multi-use creative space in Berwyn, is proud to announce its first gallery exhibit, Blank Page, on display from January 27 to February 5. The exhibit features work from nineteen artists and designers, half from within the Chicago area and half from elsewhere. The variety of work presented in the Blank Page exhibit speaks to the variety of backgrounds, experiences and points of view of the artists represented. It also speaks to the blurring of media, techniques, and identity in the contemporary art and design landscape, themes we hope to address at 22 in more depth in future exhibits and events.

As a studio and creative space, 22 has two goals: to showcase the work of emerging and established artists from within the Chicago area, and to bring innovative, informative, and challenging work to our community, through a combination of studio practice and various events and exhibits. Blank Page is the first of these exhibits. Blank Page serves as an opportunity to introduce the Berwyn and Chicago communities to 22 in general, and as an opportunity to highlight the work of a variety of artists and designers. Just as the 22 studio space presents a blank page for future events, this show presents a blank page of opportunity for our artists.

Frank Rico is a life-long Chicagoan, avid photographer, cyclist, and coffee drinker. He graduated from Roosevelt University, Chicago and isa n IT professional. His work focuses on capturing Chicago s unique urban landscape, industrial settings, diverse population, and natural beauty.

22 is a new independent art/design market located in the heart of Berwyn, 6910 Cermak, just west of downtown Chicago. 22 serves as a design studio/consultancy for Jessica Calek and Dan Streeting. In addition, as a multi-use space, 22 can function as an art gallery, lecture hall, performance stage, cinema, classroom, and so on.

The first event for 2012 is Blank Page, a gallery exhibit combining work from emerging artists in the Chicago area with work from the rest of the world... They're accepting submissions until January 13. Click here for more information.

Happy new year!

Is everyone familiar with the new "pocket park" at the corner of Windsor and Kenilworth.

Right now, it is a big blank patch of grass. The Park District plans to add a kaboose on the park.

You will notice next door, abutting the park is a big, blank wall, which is owned by the doctors
who own the building.

Wouldn't it be great to put a mural on the blank wall? Of course it would.

We could choose amongst all the local Berwyn artists and perhaps have the community help
paint the mural onto the wall.

The only catch is that this community project would cost money. The doctors are
willing to contribute some money and are excited to go forward with the project. Yet, it can be
paid for with TIF monies, since it is part of a permanent facade.

Art for thought. Or not.

John Michael McCarthy, 52, 31st and Wisconsin, passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park on Dec. 6, 2011.

Loving partner of Beverly Pierce and father to Emily. Son of the late Margaret Mary McCarthy (nee Canning) and John Michael “Mike” McCarthy, and survived by stepmother Jane McCarthy of Tampa. Loving brother to Eileen Romano (Mark), Timothy, Daniel (Diana), Megan Hadley (James), Tara, and Holly Seifert. Dear nephew of Arthur O’Brien of Chicago, and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

John grew up in Chicago and Oak Park, graduated from Oak Park-River Forest High School and attended Western Illinois University and was active in the real estate business in the Oak Park area for many years.

He was an IHSA basketball referee for schools in Oak Park for over 30 years, and an active volunteer and contributor to his community and numerous charitable endeavors in the Chicago area and elsewhere.

Celebration of John’s life at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub (7652 Madison Street, Forest Park) from 6-10 pm, Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011.

Berwyn Township and Health District is partnering with WGN radio and Greater Chicago Food Depository for a one day peanut butter collection on Thursday, December 1.

After hearing food pantries are experiencing a shortage of one of their most important foods, John Williams was inspired to rally his listeners and collect some peanut butter!

On Friday, December 2, the donations will be delivered to the Greater Chicago Food Depository to be distributed among their member food pantries. The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago's food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 678,000 adults and children in Cook County every year. Last year, the Food Depository distributed 69 million pounds of nonperishable food and fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 145,000 meals every day. The Food Depository's programs and services for children, older adults and the unemployed and underemployed address the root causes of hunger. Berwyn's Very Own

The Berwyn Route 66 Museum is not quite what you might be expecting.

Aside from hundreds of Route 66 related artifacts, there’s also a serpentine faux wall covered in local art, a bell from the original LaVergne School that predates Route 66, an electric vehicle charging station in front of the museum and — for good measure — an original window from Abraham Lincoln’s Springfield mansion.

For Jon Fey, the museum’s curator, it all makes sense ... sort of.

“Lincoln’s home in Springfield is about a block and half off the original Route 66,” said Fey. “His home was a stone’s throw from Route 66, but that’s as close as I can get it.”

After nearly 35 years of operating his plaque- and trophy-engraving company SWF Products next door, Fey decided to offer up an extra 625 square feet of his Ogden Avenue storefront to the museum project. It was his hope that the museum would promote Berwyn to tourists passing through on Route 66.

“My whole idea of this space was to build an attraction for this community and to bring people in from outside of Berwyn and have them check it out,” Fey said. “Whatever I can do to make that happen without going bankrupt or having something horrible happen is worthwhile to me.”

When Fey opened the Berwyn Route 66 Museum in January, he intended it to be a tribute to the city’s history as part of the fabled Mother Road and Dealer’s Row. Almost one year into the venture, the museum has turned into a mix of Fey’s interests that also doubles as the office and gallery space for the Berwyn Arts Council.

In truth, the museum’s eclectic nature stems from myriad interests of Fey, who enjoys making art cars, local history and especially aviation.

“If I could figure out a way to hang an airplane in here, I’d probably do it, but we’ll have to put that on hold,” said Fey, making a joke on the cramped quarters.

Fey also sits on the Berwyn Arts Council, and decided in June the space could easily double as a venue for local artists to show off their work.

For the Berwyn Arts Council, the museum-gallery space has been a boon. For the first time in its five-year existence, the council now has a proper mailing address and someone to answer its phone line. Fey has even put its name on the door just below the museum’s.

Now, through Fey, the council has showcased six artists this year and hopes to expand the program to a dozen in 2012, said Paula Swasko, president of the Berwyn Arts Council.

“It feels like it’s our little center of being now,” she said. “We kind of have a place we can call our own.”
For the last three years, the council had acted as a local arts advocate. Its most high-profile event was “Passport to Art,” featuring children artists throughout the Depot District.

Fey has allowed the Berwyn Arts Council to clear out a space in the middle of the store and put up 25 feet worth of standing metal grids to create faux walls to hang paintings.

“We have always wanted some sort of way to support local artists and making their work available to the public, but we've never had a venue in which to do that,” Swasko said. “It’s really been a treat. It’s just the right size for these small events.”

Many local artists lack a place to show off their works and often end up working in obscurity. Fey said some artists featured at the museum hadn’t had public showings in 25 years.

For Wendy Ritchy, a painter from Berwyn and art therapist at Loretto Hospital in Chicago, the gallery’s low-key nature and wide appeal is a major plus.

“I like that I can just show it to my friends and neighbors. It’s not a high-pressure kind of venue to show your work,” Ritchy said. “It’s welcoming, and it can invite all kinds of people in — people that might not ordinarily come and look at art.”

Although an art gallery housed in a room that’s ceiling is bordered by hubcaps may seem dissonant, Fey says it hasn’t taken away from the success of either venture. Fey has taken care to ensure that the Route 66 Museum is well researched and thorough while making sure artists feel at home.

The museum saw visitors this year from as far away as Sicily, Poland and even New Zealand.

“It’s amazing how many people are really into Route 66. They're kind of like groupies,” Fey said. “They’re all great people and we’re having a lot of fun with it.”

Fey was able to create the open space after technological advances cut the size of the machines SWF Products uses in half. The two storefronts, once separate buildings, were connected before Fey bought the building.

Although the art and historical venture has taken some time away from him and his staff, he feels it’s been a net positive for the business.

“It’s kind of like a bowl of candy on the table,” Fey said. “We get to talk to people we wouldn’t normally get to talk to.”

Although the Berwyn Route 66 Museum already has spawned new branches, albeit in the same room, Fey might not be done. He’s talked of making a display for Berwyn’s Depot District and other local historical artifacts.

Whatever the museum ends up being, Fey is still formulating his vision.

“Maybe it’s an eclectic museum. Maybe that’s what this is,” he said. “I just wish we had more space.”

Berwyn has lost a true icon. Bert Hicks passed away
Thursday, November 17, 2011, peacefully, in the late morning hours.

Bert Hicks was in his late 90's and formerly owned Hicks Hardware Store
at 6805 Stanley, in Berwyn.

He lived much of his life in Berwyn and knew Berwyn's history through
and through.

There will be a wake for Bert on Sunday, November 20, 2011, from 3 pm
to 8 pm, at the Kopicki's Heritage Funeral Home at 3117 S. Oak Park Avenue
in Berwyn.

Cris Mazza has authored sixteen books, most recently Various Men Who Knew Us as Girls, a novel. Her other fiction titles include Waterbaby, Trickle-Down Timeline, and Is It Sexual Harassment Yet? In 1995 & 1996, Mazza was co-editor for the original Chick-Lit anthologies: Chick-Lit: Postfeminist Fiction, and Chick-Lit 2: No Chick Vics. In 2006, her essay “Who’s Laughing Now: Chick Lit and the Perversion of a Genre,” explaining the co-opting and corrosion of the title, appeared in Poets & Writers Magazine. A native of Southern California, Mazza grew up in San Diego County. Horrorbles is proud to be teaming up with the Roosevelt Road Business Association & The Berwyn Development Corporation again on our annual Zombie Walk & Pub Crawl! The 12th Street Rag, Commodore Berry Post, Friendly Tap & Fitzgerald's Nightclub all on October 29th starting at 6:30pm!

A donation of $15 will go benefit Berwyn's very own 16th Street Theater! This includes your make-up done (If you don't come prepared!) and food! There will be no speaking while the walk commences down Roosevelt...in the true spirit of the un-dead! Moaning and growling encouraged!

Horrorbles will sponsor make-up and costume staging from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Culver's, and Citizens Community Bank, located on Roosevelt Road.

Once properly attired, zombies will be led on a pub-crawl that will overtake the 12th Street Rag, Commodore Berry VFW Post, Friendly Tap,and FitzGerald’s. FitzGerald’s will host the catered after party with films and other un-deadly fun.

5 Star show! (Time Out) returns to 16th Street!

Join us for the Berwyn Historical Society’s annual Bungalows and More
housewalk, featuring interior guided tours of six historic Berwyn homes on
Sunday, September 25, 2011, noon to 5pm. Tour starts at the Berwyn Route 66
Museum, 7003 West Ogden Avenue.This year’s tour will showcase the
well-preserved Art Moderne Silhan House, which is on the National Register of
Historic Places, as well as a range of bungalows and other vintage homes.

Tour-goers will learn the history of each home, while gaining valuable ideas
and insight for restoring and maintaining their own vintage homes. The 2011
tour homes are located in the vicinity of Berwyn’s portion of Route 66, Ogden
Ave.

Participants may walk, bike or drive the tour at their own pace during the
event. Bike parking courtesy of Active Transportation Alliance.

You can visit the homes in any order you wish. Each house is staffed with
docents, providing guided tours.

$20 tickets are now available online and at local merchants; or $25 tickets will
be available at event check-in at the Berwyn Route 66 Museum, 7003 West Ogden
Avenue, on September 25. We will also feature some unique merchandise for your
early holiday shopping.

All ticket sale proceeds will benefit the Berwyn Historical Society, a

The show will be on Friday, August 19th, 2011 at the Berwyn Route 66 Museum (7003 West Ogden Avenue, Berwyn IL 60402).

The show will start at 5:30 PM and will end at 9:00 PM that evening. The show will be available to view for the public through out the week!

Barbara has been designing and building costumes for longer that she cares to remember. She has a Ph.D in Costume Design from Florida State University, and has worked at numerous regional and educational theaters including the Shaw Festival in Canada, University of Chicago, both Morton High Schools and many more!

Visit Oak Park is hosting artists outside of the Oak Park Visitors Center (1010 Lake St, Oak Park) during Art al Fresco this summer, and they are trying to get the word out to artists who live in the 21 communities that comprise VOP, which includes Berwyn.

In a nutshell, they can accommodate up to 4 artists on Thursdays (4-7pm) and Weekends (11am-4pm). Their season officially ends on Thursday, August 25th. There is a $25 entry fee, and sales are run through the Visitors Center with a 25% consignment structure. This event is juried.

They got a late start this spring with planning this event, so they hope to begin planning in late January/early February for Summer, 2012.

Jassen Strokosch is a missing father of two, an avid bicyclist and runner. He was last seen wearing a plaid button up shirt, unknown t shirt underneath, and blue jeans or khakis. He was last seen in the area of Cermk and DesPlaines in Forest Park, on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, around 10 am.

He is believed to be on foot.

Long brown hair, hazel eyes, 6'1', 145lbs, born on May 17, 1972. He drives a Silver 2005 Pontiac Vibe that was found at Roosevelt and East in Berwyn.

Will be called an "Overnite Art Gallery"? The idea behind it is to open and close an art gallery all in 1 day. This will be held at The Peace Center, 6833 Stanley.

So far, there are 8 Artists and hoping for a few more.

Jose, one of the proprietors of Over The Rainbow, hasI a request out to City Council to close the alley way behind the building so that we can have a wine bar and acoustic muscians play at the event.

BERWYN (May 6th, 2011) – Exhibit opening night!

Horrorbles will be hosting in its “Galerie des Terrors” the artwork of Kimberly MacAulay from 7pm until 10pm.

Fascinated by humanity’s ability to survive though the most perilous times, Kimberly MacAulay’s paintings often deal with ideas of how despair is coupled with hope.

Through large-scale macabre work and small-scale figurative work, she addresses the psychology of human beings; How we perceive ourselves and how we react to others. Utilizing mostly muted colors and quiet energy, MacAulay’s paintings carry the feel of classical work with a modern twist.

Kimberly MacAulay received her BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 2005 and her MFA from the Academy of Art University in 2010. Her paintings have shown in group venues in Batavia, IL and Chicago, IL. She has exhibited in several charity events in San Francisco, has donated paintings to the International Reptile Conservation Foundation (IRCF) and regularly sets aside a percentage of sales for charities of her choice.

It’s called “The Beats,” and it is a rousing, thought-provoking, verbally brilliant, jazz-infused, tragicomic reinvention of a time in American history — the beatnik culture of the 1950s — that in many ways turns out to have been far more idealistic, spiritual and artistically driven than the hippie culture that emerged a decade later.

Adapted by Marilyn Campbell, and first seen at Writers’ Theatre in 1997, “The Beats” is now getting what will surely be the defining production of this generation at Berwyn’s now hotly competitive 16th Street Theater. Director Ann Filmer has done a “bang-o” job of things, gathering a cast of five bravura young actors whose parents might not even have been born in the era. But they clearly all have channeled back to the days of coffeehouses and manual typewriters, poetry-filled nights and smoky jazz clubs, consumer culture and conformist lifestyles — as well as the oppressive cloud of the atomic bomb and the Cold War. And superbly backed by two onstage musicians who probably do recall the beatnik world from their most youthful years — drummer Grant Strombeck and bass player Doug Lofstrom — they create a “word jazz” incantation that easily will knock you off your feet.

Campbell has drawn directly from the work of the major driving forces in the “movement,” including the vibrant, varied, feverishly sexy-spiritual poetry and prose of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Diane di Prima, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso and Ed Sanders. Of course “the beats” were never really a “movement.” They were far more about a way of being than about being a political force — interested primarily in the individualistic and visionary (at times enhanced by marijuana, peyote or chemical-free Zen Buddhism). Their mantra was free thought, experimentation, improvisation and a “Whitmanesque wisdom.”

The show is delivered here with absolute bravura force. John Taflan (tall, dark and Tony Kushner-like as the Student) gives a sensational rendering from “Howl,” Ginsberg’s controversial 1955 epic poem that triggered obscenity charges. As the Holy Hipster, the sinewy and charismatic Adam Poss (so memorable from last season’s “Scorched” at the Silk Road Project) suggests the seductive Kerouac. Dark-eyed, passionate Carly Ciarrocchi lights up the stage as di Prima, the lone Beat Chick who realizes she is forever on the periperhy in this mostly male world, though she revels in the sensuality and freedom of it all. John McGillberry, the Jazz Cat, does a terrific job with Corso’s hilariously terrified meditation on marriage. And as the Dharma Bum, Malcolm Callan serves as a one-man cautionary tale on drugs, madness and a higher consciousness,

Amid the fire and disillusionment, there also is plenty of terrific satire here, most notably by way of Sanders’ memory of a particularly indulgent poetry reading at the fabled Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village. And be sure to check out the vintage copy of a 1959 Life magazine in the theater lobby that captures the snarky attitude toward the beatnik aesthetic back then.

Like Tony Fitzpatrick’s “This Train,” another recent 16th Street production, “The Beats” deserves to find a second home at the Steppenwolf Garage or a similar venue. It could easily be the hit of the season for hipsters both young and old.

Steven Fisher studied painting& printmaking at the American Academy of
Art and currently teaches both disciplines for adults and children at
various locations in the west suburbs of Chicago.

He is a founding member of "From the Horses Mouth" artists' studio in
Berwyn. His work has been featured in numerous solo & group exhibits, as
well as on Channel 7 News with host Tracy Butler. While Steven's focus
is generally figurative, he has produced an ongoing series of
landscapes of Chicago landmarks, buildings& neighborhoods. Steven's
printmaking is often centered on stark yet lyrical monotypes that
experiment with the quality of a simple yet repetitive, overlapping
line. His pop portraits take a cue from Andy Warhol's own series of pop
icons and are a tribute to personalities that have either made an impact
on society at large or on Steve personally.

PENNY-PINCH: Ann Filmer of Berwyn's 16th Street Theater Discusses Her Budget for "Menorca"

“I’m doing everything from stocking the bathrooms to writing all the grants and doing all the marketing,” says Filmer, the theatre’s founder and artistic director. Judging from the overstuffed trunk of her car, she also schleps posters, office supplies, and tools. With a projected operating budget of approximately $100,000 for the three-play 2011 main season, 16th Street is representative of dozens of scrappy Chicago theatres that excel in the art of stretching dollars as well as audiences’ imaginations.Ann Filmer just received good news. She’s learned that the house carpenter for Steppenwolf Theatre has offered to fix a severed $150 sound cable for free. In a universe where the budget for Bono’s much-delayed Broadway musical, Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, can balloon past $50 million, $150 sounds like pocket change. But it represents about 1 percent of the average budget for a production at 16th Street Theater, a 49-seat operation in Berwyn that champions plays by underappreciated Illinois writers.

For her next production, Menorca, by the Chicago playwright Robert Koon (running through October 16th), Filmer must figure out how to stage dueling locations: an archaeological dig on a Spanish island and the desert border between Southern California and Mexico. “A lot of times a small budget enhances creativity,” she says. The set designer Kurt Sharp’s particular challenge will be representing the interior of a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle onstage for $500 or less. On the day we talk, Sharp doesn’t know yet what he’ll do.

“Buying is never the first choice, ever,” says Filmer, who draws a salary of $31,000 a year. “It’s like, where can we borrow this?” One of her board members runs an antiques business, and that’s the company’s first stop for period-specific furniture and props. Directors, designers, playwrights, and actors (even non-Equity performers) all receive small, but consistent, checks. Resident playwrights, such as Koon, earn a flat rate of $1,500—a better deal than the standard 5 percent of box-office receipts.

The company keeps ticket prices low ($16) to encourage non-traditional theatregoers in culturally diverse, working-class Berwyn. Still, 16th Street generates half of its income from box office (subscribers number around 170), with corporate sponsorships, grants, and individual donations making up the rest. But Filmer has one big financial advantage: She doesn’t pay rent, usually the biggest budget buster for most small theatres. Instead, 16th Street resides in a basement black box in the Berwyn Cultural Center. Lately, some shows have started here and moved on: In a coup for Filmer and her actors, their most recent effort, This Train, sold out a summer run in Steppenwolf’s Garage Theatre.

As a result, many of my paintings feature individuals spending time alone reflecting. While these paintings are intended to be positive or neutral, some individuals interpret them in a melancholic way or as indicative of a sense of impending doom. Robyn T. Oliver has exhibited at the Philomathean Society at the University of Pennsylvania, Art-O-Matic in Washington D.C.. She is a graduate of the University of San Deigo where she received a degree in Psychology with a minor in Art and the University of Pennsylvania where she received her PhD in Psychology. Robyn T. Oliver has studied painting at the Cocoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia, PA. Her interest in art has inspired her scholarly research in color vision, color memory and long-term memory for object appearances.

In fact, Buzz Kilman (who you saw playing the harmonica and wandering the streets as a hobo in THIS TRAIN at Steppenwolf ) will be rockin' Berwyn's Oktoberfest Saturday night. And that makes me very happy.

So after a weekend of previews, script changes, going back into rehearsal, and a final preview tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7:30, we are opening Robert Koon's Menorca this Thursday September 16. Menorca is the most ambitious show we have premiered at 16th Street. The process has been exhilarating, frightening, exhausting, and very rewarding! Last night, working in the room with the playwright and the actors, finessing moments, making magic, collaborating, was such a joy for me. Thanks to those of you in the audience this past weekend who were part of discovering a new play for the first time. Your energy and feedback was so helpful.

Being a Playwright

I know some of you have thought, "Well I would sure like to write a play, or at least learn how."

Part of Robert Koon's give back to the community as playwright-in-residence here at 16th Street is offering a 2-day all-level playwriting workshop for adults on Sat Aug 28 from 11am - 4pm and Fri Sep 3 from 7 - 10pm.

Closing Photography Reception

The closing reception for Berwyn resident and friend Rod Piechowski's photography exhibit will be held this Saturday, July 17th from 7 to 10 PM at the Tamale Hut Cafe in North Riverside, IL., at the corner of 1st Avenue and Cermak.

Tamales will be specially priced at 2 for 1 for this event. Beer and wine available or BYO. Whether you missed the opening reception or not, come out and enjoy a great evening with friends and supporters of the arts.

Rod will answer questions and discuss his approach to creating the images.

Dominican University (located just minutes from the Chicago Loop) will host Blues and the Spirit II, celebrating the centennial of Howlin' Wolf's birth and the 40th anniversary of Living Blues Magazine . Second, Horrorbles second show features Cristina Bellar Friday, May 21st from 7:30pm-10:30pm. Cristina Bellar is a self-taught illustrator, jewelry artisan and junk collector. She is always looking to combine her art with her love of vintage oddities, the Victorian era and morbid curiosities. She focuses on Digital Art: Painting and Manipulation, Traditional Pen & Ink, and Mixed Media/Assemblage.

Bellar's jewelry can be described as Gothic, Steampunk, Romantic and Victorian. Lexie is a fun-loving Boxer mix who needs regular entertainment and exercise. She was originally a rescue from the Animal Care League in downtown Chicago, and is likely about 4 years old. Crate-trained and great on a leash, but still has a lot of puppy-like energy. She is coming from an “only-dog” household, but would love to be paired with another young dog that enjoys serious play time. Updated on her shots and gets along great with other well-socialized dogs. Not a good match for children under 10 years old.

Come see the sensational artwork by the students of the North and South Berwyn School districts, as well as St. Odilo and St. Leonards Catholic Schools displayed in 14 Depot District businesses!

Students and children attending with their parents will receive a "passport." As students search and "travel" to find the art, they will receive a sticker in each business they visit. Mom and dad can look at the art, and discover some of the wonderful shops and restaurants in the Depot District area.

Once students have a "full" passport, they can end their adventure at the "Over the Rainbow" Ice Cream Shop for a free ice cream cone! Coming to a town near you...

Horrorbles is proud to welcome Mixed media artist, Jeffrey Gorski on 
Friday, April 30th from 7:30-10:30 pm. After one of Jeffrey's
custom-painted vinyl dolls - a piece inspired by Friday the 13th slasher
Jason Voorhees - went on display at Horrorbles recently, the Galerie
eagerly commissioned more work from the artist.

An aspiring filmmaker and a photographer by trade, Jeff's keen eye for
detail and passion for all things pop culture guides his aesthetic. He
specializes in custom-painted dolls, painted canvas and creative stencil
work that inventively - and often humorously - re-imagines some of
horror history's most infamous killers, legendary movie monsters and
other beloved characters.

Jeff based each piece in his upcoming show at Horrorbles on iconic
horror & pop-culture characters, such as the hugely popular video game
Bioshock's looming "Big Daddy" and Homestar's cocky "Strongbad"
luchador, and also designed a few pieces of his own macabre creation,
such as a vinyl doll with a saw blade embedded in his skull and another
who's a "work in progress" - skin stitched up like Sally from The
Nightmare Before Christmas.

Jeff's other pieces celebrate Evil Dead, Halloween and Silent Hill using
stencils painted on vintage vinyl records and canvas. Jeff's collection
at Horrorbles will also feature a series of custom-painted mini monsters
and more.

All displayed pieces will be available for sale with Jeffrey present all
evening to answer questions. The artist is also available to do custom

On Sunday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m., William Perry Johnson will give an all-Beethoven piano recital at First Lutheran Church of Berwyn (corner of 31st & Euclid). Mr. Johnson, who lives and teaches piano in Oak Park, is the Music Director for the Presbyterian Church of Berwyn.

The concert will consist of: Piano Sonata No. 27 in E minor, Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, and Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major. There is no charge for the concert, but a free-will offering will be taken to benefit the Cicero-Berwyn-Stickney Food Pantry.

In from Mexico City, the "Second City" of Mexico performs their bi-lingual improv for one-night only in Berwyn with opening act Dominizuelan! A part of the Chicago Improv Festival 2010.

ImproTop is to Mexico City what iO & Second City are to Chicago. They have been performing in Mexico for over 13 years and this is their American debut. In 2009, their improv show, "Hazme Reir y Seras Millonario", was a series on Mexican television and it was a great success. This year, they have been working with Mexico's most important cultural institution CONACULTA. At CIF, they will perform two shows, Improbroadway (their improvised musical), and Improteptl (their prehispanic improvised tale). The cast of five will improvise bilingually in English and Spanish.

Magallon's connection to Little Village spans nearly three-quarters of a century with his father's and mother's families residing within the community.

The Village of Oak Park invites local artists to submit concepts for murals on the retaining walls along the Green Line railroad corridor in Oak Park. Eight artists and concepts will be selected.

Each artist will receive $500 for materials upon selection and a $500 stipend when mural is completed.

Finished size - 6' x 8' or 6' x 11'
Medium - Paint (should be weather resistant)
Selection criteria - Artistic merit, appropriateness and originality

Deadline to apply is 5 p.m, Tuesday, April 20.

Hosted by the non-partisan All Berwyn Committee and moderated by CARES President Shelley Titzer, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the state of education in Berwyn and a rare chance to see the results of how your property tax dollars (approx 50%) are spent. Speakers from Districts 98, 100 and 201 will be available for Q&A.
