City Council Recap, June 10, 2008
We have a new Finance Director, actually approved by the City Council.

The Village of Oak Park recognized Berwyn for our Centennial.

There will be a couple of new parking ordinances put in place. The orginal idea, put forward by the Police Department and City Collector was to get rid of two visitors parking passes for each home, since they are abused by many homeowners who use the visitor passes instead of obtaining a city vehicle sticker. But, the Alderpersons' twisted logic will not prevent the abuse.

People will still be allowed two visitor parking passes per household. Anything above two, and the homeowner would have to pay for a booklet of one use passes. Bottom line, people will still abuse the visitor parking passes and no one will buy the booklets. Nothing accomplished.

What may happen in the future, my original idea, of course, proposed by another Alderperson as if a new idea would make Berwyn, like some other municipalities, a "No overnight parking" city. This would mean that to legally park in Berwyn overnight, you would have to have a city sticker, guest parking permit or sticker from the booklet. Time will tell.

That is about it. Remember, that additional Centennial festivities continue on Monday: a citywide evening ice cream social at 34th and Grove.

Then, on the 18th, behind Cermak Plaza, next to Morton High School, there will be bands, food, carnival I believe, through Sunday the 22nd.

I will post the schedule at another time.

Centennial Picnic, Saturday the 14th of June
The Berwyn Park District invites everyone to participate in the Centennial Picnic on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Proksa Park.

In conjunction with the Combined Veterans of Berwyn, State Representative La Shawn Ford and State Representative Robert Molaro, Congressman Lipinski and State Senator Sandavol, LIFESOURCE, the Berwyn Park District will host a Picninc in honor of Berwyn's Centennial and a Blood Drive on Flag Day, which is also World Blood Donor Day!

As part of the picnic festivities, the first 500 people will receive a free hot dog, chips, pop and a free commemorative American flag for attending the event.

Please join us and help donate 100 pints of blood for 100 years of Berwyn in celebration of the Centennial.

The festivities start at 12:00 pm (noon) and are scheduled until 5:00 p.m.

The Berwyn Park District hopes that you can join it at this FREE event!

If Congressman Lipinski does attend, feel free to corner him about the trains and engage him in discussion.

City Council Recap, May 27, 2008
There may be some new parking at 32nd and Harlem in the future. Would be a City lot on the north side, diagonal, and parallel parking in a cutout of the parkway on the southside. Would really open up the street for traffic to move.

The Finance Department was approved for a new computer software system. This now brings Berwyn into the 21st Century.

A new comprehensive sign ordinance is now on the books. Again, should bring our signage into the 21st century.

Berwyn is now also in the 21st century concerning discrimination. You can not discriminate against a person's sexual orientation. In the 1990's this was a controversial subject. At the meeting, the Community Relations Ordinance adding "sexual orientation" passed unanimously. There was one person in the audience who passed around a statement indicating why amending the ordinance was not the right thing to do. This person was my republican opponent in the last election.

Out of 51 items on the agenda, the above made it into the recap.

3rd Annual Berwyn House Tour, Today, 6-1-08
The Berwyn Historical Society once again is proud to announce the 3rd annual Bungalow Tour. June 1, 2008 Noon til 5:00 p.m. There are great houses on the tour once again. The Bond home, featured in American Bungalow, Summer 2007 issue is our star attraction. Don't let a little thing like the Berwyn Centennial Parade keep you from attending this event. For more information, or to purchase your advance tickets go to www.berwynbungalow.org or call the Berwyn Historical Society at 708.484.0020

This is your only chance to get inside James Bond's house. Tickets for Sunday's tour are still available at Ace Hardware on Ogden, James and Williams Jewelers on Cermak, Serendipity Antiques on Stanley and Two Fish Art Glass on Madison in Forest Park. Tickets are available on the day of the tour at the starting point, Berwyn Health Center, 26th and East. However, Sunday sales are cash only and a few bucks more.
Please come out and support the tour. The BHS is hoping to exceed last year's guest count of 311. Hope to see you there. Or not, but really, I will be at one of the houses.
